Rural Retreat at Grayson County

Preseason optimism was dampened when Rural Retreat opened with a disappointing 34-0 loss at Fort Chiswell. The Indians (1-1) rebounded at Bland County with a 42-6 win and will tackle their third straight Mountain Empire District foe when they travel to Independence to face the Blue Devils (2-0).

Rural Retreat threw rarely but effectively against the Bears as J.B. Wright hit all six of his passes for 160 yards and a pair of scores. T.C. Caudill added 96 rushing yards for the Indians.

Grayson ran exactly half as many plays as Chilhowie (38 to 76) but made the most of its possessions in a 35-21 win last week. The Devils led 14-12 with 10 minutes left before finishing with a bang.

Grayson has won the last two meetings by a combined total of 107-33.

Carroll County at Christiansburg

The Blue Demons graduated a stellar senior class from a team that took a 28-26 loss in last year’s Division 4 state championship game, and apparently haven’t tailed off a bit.

With a junior-heavy roster, the Blue Demons appear to be as powerful as ever on offense, led by De’Quan Green-Gause and Joey Augustin. Bit players a year ago, the two combined for nearly 300 rushing yards last week as C’burg improved to 2-0 with a 35-14 whipping of Giles. The Demons amassed 361 rushing yards, throwing just twice.

Carroll County (0-2) is coming off a 28-7 loss at Mount Airy, finishing with just 24 rushing yards thanks in part to seven sacks for minus-34 yards. Defensively the Cavaliers didn’t play poorly but often took the field with their backs to the wall.

Galax at Eastern Montgomery

A third straight Three Rivers District opponent awaits the Maroon Tide, which will try to rebound from last week’s 33-14 loss at Floyd County.

The Mustangs are off to a 2-0 start, getting it done through the air and on the ground in wins over Bath County and Narrows. Daryl Manns ran for three touchdowns as EastMont overtook Bath 27-21, and James Fields was 20-of-37 for 258 yards and five scores in a 42-32 win last week over Narrows. Ron Ford caught five passes for 102 yards and Brett Pettus had two TD grabs last week.

Galax got 196 rushing yards and two scores from Donte Peoples at Floyd but was killed by six turnovers.
