DRAPER –– Turning in a team total of 300 at Draper Valley would be good enough to win a state championship most years. But not on Mondays.
Led by brothers Ryan and Jake Monday, Blacksburg obliterated the team scoring record and claimed its first championship in the fifth annual Draper Valley Prep Classic, held Monday at the par-72 Draper Valley Golf Club.
The Bruins finished with a four-man total of 293, whacking 15 strokes off of the previous low team score of 308, set two years ago by Graham.
Galax, the defending team champion and the Group A state runner-up last fall, finished a distant second despite posting a team score that would have shattered the old record by eight shots.
Ryan Monday and Jake Monday finished tied for the lead at 1-under 71, and Ryan defeated Jake on the first playoff hole to earn the individual championship. Their scores also tied the record for low score in the tournament, set by Pulaski County’s Heath Viers in 2006. Mike Yourshaw turned in a 74 for Blacksburg, the Group AA state runner-up last year after three straight state championships. Jake Prater shot 77.
Led by Dustin Thompson’s 73, the Maroon Tide coasted to the runner-up finish with a 300, a full 22 strokes ahead of third-place Graham. Radford (346) and Bath County (350) rounded out the top five.
Carroll County (353) placed sixth as a team, followed by Grayson County (360), Tazewell (369), Chilhowie (371), Patrick Henry-Glade Spring (387) and host Fort Chiswell (404).
Kristopher Goad of Carroll County was one shot off of the lead, finishing a close third with an even-par 72, tied with Conner Hayden of Chilhowie.
Galax placed all four of its scoring golfers among the top 16 in the field of 54 individuals. Thompson was all alone in fifth place in the individual standings, while Brock Cox shot a 74, John Bryant turned in a 75 and Jon Alouf added an 80.
Grayson County was led by the 15th-place showing of Tyler Rutherford, who shot 79.
Galax tops defending state champ
Giles and Galax have split the last two Group A state golf championships, each finishing second to the other, and the two powers went at it head-to-head on Thursday with the Maroon Tide taking the win over the Spartans in a nondistrict match at Blue Ridge Country Club.
John Bryant shot a 1-under-par 69 to lead Galax to a four-man total of 290, six shots better than their Three Rivers District rivals. Brock Cox was one shot off of the pace at 70 while Dustin Thompson carded a 74 and Jon Alouf added a 77.
Giles was led by Gunar Frazier’s 72 and Tyler Meredith’s 73. Andrew Epperly shot 75 for the Spartans and Tanner Carbaugh had a 76.
