Galax will host the MED tournament tomorrow on the heels of its first perfect MED run in 10 years.

Galax locked up the Mountain Empire District regular season championship and a spot in the Region C tournament Tuesday, knocking off Bland County 25-11, 25-17, 25-4 in the Maroon Tide’s regular season finale. Galax will host the MED tournament tomorrow (Saturday) with a perfect 10-0 record in district play, 15-4 overall. “This was a big win going into the district tournament,” Maroon Tide coach Rose Houk said. “Being undefeated in the district is a great feeling. I’m so happy for the girls.” Galax ran the table on the district for the first time since volleyball was a winter sport, back in 1998-99. “I’m blessed with a great team and some wonderful assistant coaches,” Houk said, referring to Emily Tolley, Jennifer Lewis and JV coach Onnie Harmon. “We’re playing really good right now. When we play up to our potential like we have been doing, we’re an exciting team to watch.” Galax had little trouble in the first game with the Bears, who will enter the MED tournament as the No. 2 seed. Drew Cardwell served for points 3-10 as the Tide pulled out to a 10-4 lead. The Bears pounced on Galax early in the second, scoring seven unanswered points, but Galax gradually battled back and caught Bland County at 10. “Bland served well and we didn’t pass very well at the beginning,” Houk said, “plus, Bland had some very good digs off of our hits.” Galax outscored the Bears 15-7 to finish off the second game, and kept the momentum in the third, holding Bland to a mere four points, finishing the match on a 15-0 run with Allison White at the serving line. Every third serve was an ace for White, who went to a potent jump-serve and fired five aces in the final 15 points.  “Allison had a tremendous all-around match,” Houk said of the sophomore hitter. White finished the night with 18 kills, a pair of blocks, eight aces and 15 serving points. Jenna White put up 20 assists while Bailey Shumate and Kaitlin Porter had 10 digs apiece. Drew Cardwell added 15 serving points. GALAX TO HOST MED TOURNAMENT Galax will host the Mountain Empire District volleyball tournament tomorrow (Saturday) at GHS.
