WYTHEVILLE –– Galax broke open a 1-1 game with an eight-run uprising in the third inning and the Maroon Tide went on to run-rule George Wythe 11-1 in five innings in a nondistrict softball game Monday.

Maroon Tide pitcher Lauren Garvey gave up a single to the second batter she faced on the day before shutting down the Maroons the rest of the afternoon. Garvey finished with a one-hitter, allowing one unearned run while striking out five and walking none.

Meanwhile, Galax’s bats cranked out 15 hits, including a combined seven by Ally Bartlett and Holly Cassell. Bartlett went 4-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs while Cassell had two doubles and a pair of RBIs in her 3-for-4 effort.

With the score tied 1-1, Galax (2-1) opened the top of the third inning with a line-out before eight straight Maroon Tide batters reached safely. Both of Cassell’s doubles came in the rally. Garvey, Taylor Ashworth and Bartlett each had a two-run single in the frame.

Garvey and Brooklyn Key also had two hits for Galax.

Auburn 11, Grayson County 5: The Blue Devils built an early 4-0 lead but the Eagles roared back with a 10-run outburst and spoiled Grayson’s opener 11-5 Friday at the Grayson Recreation Park.

Claire Circle smacked a home run in her first at-bat of the season as Grayson County jumped on Auburn for three first-inning runs.

The Blue Devils added a run on an Auburn error in the bottom of the third but the Eagles erupted for 10 runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good. Katie Saylors ripped a bases-loaded triple into the right field corner to highlight the Auburn uprising. The Eagles combined six hits, two walks, an error and a dropped third strike, sending 15 batters to the plate and doing all their damage after the Blue Devils retired the first two Auburn hitters.

Saylors and Makayla Burlingame had two hits each for Auburn and Burlingame recorded the win, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits in a complete game effort.

Chelsie Callahan had three hits for Grayson County while Claire Circle, Brady Cassell and Grace Circle added two hits each.

Pulaski County 7, Galax 6: A late Maroon Tide rally came up one run short as the Cougars took a nondistrict win Saturday in Dublin.

A 4-0 Galax lead evaporated through the middle innings as Pulaski County scored seven unanswered runs from the fourth through the sixth innings. Galax countered with two runs in the top of the seventh as Holly Cassell singled to drive in Stacy Shumate and Ally Bartlett scored on a Madison Shupe ground out, but the rally ran out of steam there.

Brittany Byrd’s RBI single spotted Galax (1-1) a 1-0 lead in the first and the Maroon Tide tacked on three runs in the third on a Shupe double, a Byrd sacrifice fly and a Morgan Neff single.

Bartlett, Byrd and Cassell registered two hits each for Galax.

BASEBALL

George Wythe 5, Galax 2: The Maroons did all their damage in the first inning and held on to defeat the Maroon Tide in a nondistrict game Monday in Wytheville.

George Wythe combined three walks and three singles to push its five runs across before managing just two hits the rest of the afternoon off of Logan Beamer, who went the distance for Galax.

The Maroon Tide chipped away with single runs in each the fifth and seventh innings. Jacob Stuart singled and eventually scored on Chandler Quesenberry’s sacrifice fly in the fifth. In the top of the seventh, Caleb Pack singled and scored on a Brett Isom fly ball, but the Maroon Tide left runners at second and third to end the game.

Pack had two of Galax’s three hits, including a triple.
