Tide rebounds with key MED win

 MAX MEADOWS –– Justin Hash’s 3-pointer with 1:10 to play put Galax in front 64-62 and the Maroon Tide took a critical Mountain Empire District win Thursday night, edging Fort Chiswell 66-62.

In a week that opened with three teams undefeated in the MED and riding winning streaks of six games apiece, Galax lost a one-point decision to Grayson County on Tuesday but bounced back to deal the Pioneers their first MED loss of the year two nights later.

Devonte McKinney poured in 24 points to lead all scorers while Hash and Austin Pack each scored 12 points for Galax (12-2 overall, 3-1 MED).

Fort Chiswell (15-3, 3-1) saw its six-game winning streak snapped, losing for just the third time this season. Nathaniel Worrell scored 18 points to pace the Pioneers and Jared Smith tossed in 13.

Carroll County 72, Marion 58: Three days after a 42-point win over the Scarlet Hurricane, the Cavaliers didn’t take the lead for good until late in the fourth quarter of their SWD win Friday in Marion.

Connor Lundy dropped in a 3-pointer with about three minutes to play to put Carroll County (10-6, 6-2) in front for good, and the Cavaliers pulled away down the stretch. Lundy would pace Carroll County with 15 points, Austin Horton scored 14 and Wes Smoot added 12.

Austin Klug led all scorers with 19 points for Marion (7-8, 2-5).
