Tide reaches finale with 9-0 mark

Galax scored three special teams touchdowns and will take on Grayson County in a battle of 9-0 teams

BASTIAN –– The Galax football team has a return policy that would make Sam Walton proud – Don’t like it? Bring it back, whatever it is. But there was little for the Maroon Tide not to like.

Galax scored 14 points before ever taking an offensive snap, and returned three kicks for touchdowns on a soggy night alongside I-77, rolling over Bland County 49-0 in a Mountain Empire District game Friday night.

The win sets up the matchup many have been hoping for this year when Galax and Grayson County meet with identical 9-0 records Friday, with the MED championship on the line.

Deion George got the Maroon Tide (4-0 district) off to a hot start with a 70-yard kickoff for a touchdown to open the game. It was George’s third touchdown return of the season, tying Jacob Fisher for the team lead.

Following a three-and-out by Bland, Fisher promptly un-tied himself from George, fielding a punt at his own 43 and scampering 57 yards for a touchdown.

Eli Brady’s second PAT had Galax leading 14-0 before its offense ever set foot on the field.

The Maroon Tide offense finally got into the action late in the first half when Austin Pack connected with George on a 35-yard touchdown pass and a 21-0 lead after one quarter.

Bland County made the mistake of punting to Fisher again in the second quarter, and Fisher responded with his fifth return for a touchdown this year, this time a 74-yarder.

Donte Peoples and Steven Peoples added scoring runs in the second quarter from 6 and 26 yards, respectively, and Brady capped the first half with a 22-yard field goal for a 42-0 lead at the break.

Steven Peoples rounded out the scoring in the third quarter with a 32-yard touchdown run.

The Maroon Tide managed only 185 yards from scrimmage on the night as its offense was kept off the field by its special teams. Jordan Vaughan and Steven Peoples both ran for 60 yards to lead Galax, which held Bland County to 104 yards of total offense.
