HILLSVILLE -- Galax got a battle for the better part of three quarters Wednesday but pulled away in the second half to head into Christmas break on the heels of an 83-66 nondistrict win over Carroll County.

The Cavaliers (0-6) worked their way into a 31-23 lead, but the Maroon Tide (5-1) went on a 13-1 run in the final two minutes of the first half to lead 36-32 at intermission. Michael Bond canned a 3-pointer and Devae Goins finished a fast break to spark the run, and Justin Hash capped it with a trey just before the half. The Cavaliers opened the second half with a 6-0 run on baskets by Mac Martin, Ryan Gravley and Eric Marshall to take their last lead of the night, 38-36, before the Maroon Tide scored 10 unanswered points to begin pulling away. Bryan Martin and Brock Cox each connected from long range in the spurt. The Cavaliers were still within eight points late in the period but Jerad Brown’s three-point play closed the quarter with Galax ahead 59-48. Carroll County was within 10 points just once more the rest of the game, 54-63 on Mac Martin’s conversion of a Marshall feed at 6:11 of the fourth. Galax scored the next five points, though, and gradually pulled away, thanks in part to a 32-10 rebounding advantage in the second half. The Cavaliers were poised to take a lead into halftime if not for the Tide surge to close the half. Tyler Reavis scored off a steal and Brandon Noonkester dropped in a 3-pointer for an 18-14 Carroll County lead, and back-to-back Reavis buckets had Carroll up 25-17. Gravley and Mac Martin each sank two foul shots for the Cavaliers’ biggest lead of the night before the Maroon Tide drew back in front. George and Hash paced Galax with 25 and 23 points, respectively, while George and Brown each pulled down 13 rebounds. Cox added 10 points for the Tide. Mac Martin dropped in 24 points for the Cavaliers, who also got 13 from Reavis.   Galax.................14  22  23  24––83 Carroll County.....13  19  16  18––66
