MAX MEADOWS -- Some basketball teams aren’t this proficient shooting free throws. Galax attempted 22 shots on goal and connected on 12 of them, thoroughly dismantling Narrows 12-0 in a Mountain Empire District tournament semifinal Tuesday at Fort Chiswell High School. The top-seeded Maroon Tide (10-5-1) advanced to Thursday’s championship match against No. 3 Fort Chiswell, which upset No. 2 Grayson County in Tuesday’s second semifinal. It took all of 50 seconds for Galax to take the lead for good as Juan Moreno passed ahead to José Martinez near the left corner, and Martinez centered to Omar Ramirez who popped the ball into the net for the quick lead. The Maroon Tide duplicated the play three minutes later, this time with Simo Lagerspetz forwarding to Ramirez in the corner, and Ramirez centering to Jose Rojas. Leanel Vega fired a ground-hugging shot that took a freaky hop over the outstretched arms of Narrows goalkeeper Ben Morrison and into the left side of the goal in the sixth minute and Rojas scored unassisted 10 minutes later for a 4-0 lead. Galax added goals by Seth Criner, Andres Medina and José Martinez before halftime to take a 7-0 lead into the break. Martinez completed a hat trick with more than 24 minutes remaining, scoring first on an assist from Rojas, then again in the 55th minute as the lead grew to 9-0. Vega, Miguel Lopez and Moreno added late goals for the final margin. While Morrison was facing more shots than a shooting gallery duck, and made 10 saves on the day, Galax keeper Ryan Cantrell was probably the loneliest kid in the stadium as the Maroon Tide’s swarming defense held Narrows without a shot the entire afternoon. Cantrell did get to stop one ball, though, as Galax’s 12th goal was followed by a gridiron-style kickoff by Narrows toward the Tide goal. Fort Chiswell 4, Grayson County 1: Pioneer goalkeeper Cody Akers stopped 15 Blue Devil shots as Fort Chiswell upset Grayson County in Tuesday’s second match. Akers’ save total included three Blue Devil penalty kicks. Lee Price scored a pair of goals for Fort Chiswell and Zane Gregory added a goal and an assist. Grayson County’s season ended at 9-6-1.   MED Semifinals Galax 12, Narrows 0 Scoring summary: Gal – Ramirez 1’ (Martinez); Gal – J.Rojas 3’ (Ramirez); Gal – Vega 6’ (unassisted); Gal – Rojas 16’ (unassisted); Gal – Medina 27’ (Lopez); Gal – Martinez 30’ (E.Rojas); Gal – Criner 34’ (unassisted); Gal – Martinez 44’ (J.Rojas); Gal – Martinez 56’ (unassisted); Gal – Vega 63’ (E.Rojas); Gal – Lopez 75’ (J.Rojas); Gal – Moreno 79’ (unassisted).
