For the past two years at Galax High School, Jamie Cockerham played volleyball on a higher level. Now, she’s going to a higher level to play.
Cockerham, the reigning player of the year in the Mountain Empire District, announced her plans to play volleyball at Emory and Henry College last week, committing to the Wasps in a ceremony at Galax High. In Emory, Cockerham will be joining a program that certainly appears to be on the rise. The Wasps finished the 2008 season with its most successful campaign in at least a decade, putting together a 20-6 record before falling to Virginia Wesleyan in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament. The team will return 11 of its 15 roster players, including 2008 ODAC freshman of the year Rachel Fertitta. The Wasps are under the direction of sixth-year head coach Cassie Pochyla, a 2001 E&H graduate. Cockerham was one of the Mountain Empire District’s top hitters during her career, finishing her two-year stint at the varsity level with 530 kills, 355 digs and 423 serving points, including 128 aces. Cockerham was a first-team all-district and second-team all-Region C choice as a junior, also earning a spot on the Fort Chiswell Invitational all-tournament team. As a senior, Cockerham put away 333 kills, came up with 146 digs, served for 215 points, including 60 aces, and had 49 blocks. Those numbers were good enough to earn MED player of the year honors, a spot on the first team on both all-district and all-region lists and an honorable mention all-Group A nod. The Maroon Tide’s team captain was also the MVP in the Fort Chiswell tournament. Cockerham, who plays club volleyball for a team out of Radford, is also an alternate on the Virginia High School Coaches’ Association East-West all-star roster.
