Galax jumped out to a 10-point lead after seven minutes and never let Grayson County inside of double figures the rest of the night, taking a 57-34 win in a Mountain Empire District game Friday night.

The Maroon Tide improved to 7-3 overall on the year with the win, 2-1 in district play, dropping the Blue Devils to 1-9, 0-1.

Cliff Conley scored a game-high 24 points for Galax, getting off to a hot start with a trio of 3-pointers in the first half. He connected from long range twice late in the first period as the Maroon Tide pulled away from a 6-3 lead with a 10-3 run to a 16-6 advantage.

Keyshawn Brown opened the second quarter with a spot-up 3-pointer and Darian Brown followed with a soft jump-hook from the lane to widen Galax’s lead to 15 points, 21-6. Grayson County had struggled through a 1-for-11 start from the floor until Ty Cannaday connected on a pair of layups, but Conley knocked down another 3-pointer and swished a jumper from the wing. Chase Garvey closed out the first half by beating the buzzer with a 3-pointer from the left corner to give the Maroon Tide a 32-16 cushion heading into the half.

Galax only managed five points in the third quarter but the Blue Devils were able to make little headway. Cannaday, who led Grayson County with 18 points, scored off his own steal and James Williams hit a transition bucket to close the third quarter, but the Blue Devils were only able to trim three points off Galax’s lead and trailed 37-24 after three quarters of play.

Galax was soon up by 20, opening the final period with a 9-2 run starting with a Garvey basket and capped by Chandler Quesenberry’s 3-pointer. Conley sank six straight foul shots in the fourth quarter as the Maroon Tide went 9-for-13 from the free throw line down the stretch.

Galax would shoot 43 percent from the floor on the night (19-of-44), including 7-of-17 from 3-point range, holding the Blue Devils to 11-of-50 shooting.
