WYTHEVILLE –– Galax survived a flurry of last-second attempts and held on to edge George Wythe 32-31 in a nondistrict girls’ game Thursday night.

A 6-0 run by the Maroons (1-3) had Galax trailing by a point before Taylor Bryant’s driving basket put the Maroon Tide (1-1) in front 32-31 with 39 seconds left.

The Maroons held the ball before missing a jumper, grabbing the rebound and calling timeout with 9.6 seconds to go. Kristen Atwell and Deneshia VanDorp both missed from short range in the waning moments, with the final rebound batted around on the floor as the buzzer sounded.

The Maroon Tide didn’t hit its first field goal until Bailey Shumate’s 3-pointer with six seconds left in the opening period. After winning the opening tip and misfiring on its first two shots, Galax didn’t cross midcourt for another three minutes as the Wythe pressure produced turnovers on the Tide’s next five possessions. The Maroons led 7-0 on Carla Suthers’ basket underneath at 4:01 of the first.

But Wythe wouldn’t connect again from the floor for nearly 10 minutes. Opening the second quarter in a half-court trap, Galax held Wythe without a field goal for the first 5:50, taking the lead on a Shumate pull-up jumper and a stickback by Hailey Cassell.

The Maroons did manage three free throws during its dry spell and knotted the game at 12 on Atwell’s inside shot, but Haley Reynolds scored in transition and Shumate knocked down another trey as the Maroon Tide carried a 17-12 lead into the half.

Galax took its largest lead, 20-14, on Bryant’s 3-pointer at 4:54 of the third, and Allison White’s drive had the Tide ahead 30-25 with 4:02 left in the fourth.

Atwell, who scored 18 points on an array of post moves, connected twice from underneath and her two foul shots with 1:07 to go gave Wythe a brief lead before Bryant’s winning bucket.

Shumate led Galax with 11 points and Bryant added a strong nine points, seven rebounds and five steals.
