It took a week, but Galax fought its way back into title contention.
In a girls’ tennis match that was suspended last Thursday, Galax held off Grayson County 5-4 Wednesday afternoon, forcing a three-way playoff for the Mountain Empire District regular season championship.
Galax played Bland County yesterday (Thursday) in Wytheville, with the winner taking on Grayson County today for the crown.
Galax led 4-1 but trailed in three of the remaining matches when play resumed Wednesday. With the team score deadlocked 4-4, the No. 2 doubles team of Tayler Engelhardt and Marie Orton came back from a first-set loss to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, clinching the team win.
Jamie Cockerham took the No. 1 singles match over Alyssa Wingate as four singles matches went three sets. Orton, Jenna White and Carahline Stark also won three-set singles matches for Galax.
Grayson County got singles wins from Kristen Davis and Devin Osborne, and knotted the match by taking the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches.
Grayson County 9, Galax 7: The Blue Devils came back from six runs down to nip the Maroon Tide in a Mountain Empire District game Tuesday at the GNB Baseball Complex.
Galax (9-6 overall, 2-3 district) led 7-1 in the middle of the second when the Blue Devils (9-6, 6-0) began their comeback. The bottom third of the lineup sparked the uprising with singles from Zack Hill and Jake Blizzard and a Ben Osborne walk. Jessup Lambert and Tyler Rutherford stroked back-to-back doubles for a 7-5 game.
Grayson tied it in the fifth and took the lead in the sixth when Hill tripled home a run and later scored.
Galax cut the lead to 9-8 in the top of the seventh on a Brock Cox RBI single before Jared Sells came on to get two ground ball outs and record the save.
The Maroon Tide opened the game with four runs on one hit, two errors and three wild pitches. Cox added a two-run single in the second for the seven-run cushion. Bubba Bowen took the mound in the second and worked through the sixth to earn the win, allowing one run on two hits. Hill was 3-for-3, Rutherford had two hits and Lambert drove in three runs for Grayson, which won its fourth one-run game in district play.
Abingdon 8, Carroll County 7: The Falcons turned an unusual double play in the top of the sixth to preserve their Southwest District win Monday in Abingdon.
Trailing by one, Jordan Lamb singled and stole second, and Tyler Reavis drilled a shot to centerfield. Lamb lost his footing rounding third and was gunned down at the plate, and Reavis, who held up momentarily as Lamb regained his footing, was caught trying to take third on the play.
Abingdon scored five runs in the first, including a two-run single from Kenny Pope and a two-run Bobby Webb home run.
Carroll County quickly took the lead with six runs in the second, the big blow coming on a Matt Fink grand slam.
Tied 7-7 after three, Abingdon edged ahead in the fourth on Zach Witt’s RBI single.
Following the sixth-inning dramatics, Witt come on in the seventh to record the save.
Tyler Reavis was 3-for-4 for Carroll County.
Carroll County 2, Marion 1: Jarrod McCombs tossed a complete-game two-hitter as the Cavaliers edged the Scarlet Hurricane in a SWD game Friday in Marion.
McCombs struck out 12, walking four. Craig Rosen scored on a double steal in the top of the second, and David Reavis crossed on a Tyler Reavis double in the fourth. Tyler Reavis went 3-for-3 on the day.
Carroll County 3, Grayson County 3 (8 innings): Amber Cannaday scored in the bottom of the eighth as the Cavaliers edged the Blue Devils in a nondistrict game Tuesday in Hillsville.
Meagan Snow scored on Kendra Galyean’s bunt in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Jacqueline led off the home eighth with a walk before exiting for pinch runner Cannaday,
The Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead on a pair of Grayson County errors in the third. The Blue Devils jumped ahead on a Traci Crigger RBI double in the fourth followed by an error and a Catherine Vaughan RBI single in the fifth. Grayson had the go-ahead run doubled up at third base in the top of the eighth.
Rebecca Thomas struck out 18 and walked none in earning the win.
Galax 5, Fort Chiswell 2: The Maroon Tide improved to 6-8 following an 0-7 start, knocking off the Pioneers in an MED game Tuesday in Max Meadows. Jill Bartlett had three hits and Adrienne Sikes struck out 13.
Galax 19, Narrows 3 (5 innings): The Maroon Tide made the most of its six hits, adding 11 walks to roll over the Green Wave in an MED game Monday at Mountain View Park.
Five walks and a two-run Channing Russell single gave Galax a 5-3 lead in the first. The Tide drew five more free passes in a four-run second. Drew Cardwell capped the day with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth. Janisa Lawson struck out five in earning the pitching win.
Galax’s hot streak began with a pair of MED wins over Bland, winning 5-2 on May 1 and 6-3 on Friday.
Radford 4, Galax 0: J. Clark scored a pair of goals as the Bobcats defeated the Maroon Tide in a nondistrict game last Friday. Radford limited Galax to seven shots on goal.
Radford 9, Galax 0: Anna Witkowski scored four times as the Bobcats rolled to a nondistrict win Friday in Radford. The game was called at halftime due to lightning.
