It should come as no surprise that Fort Chiswell dominated the all-Mountain Empire District football voting. After all, the Pioneers rolled unchallenged to the district championship with a 9-1 overall record. But Galax and Grayson County were well-represented on the list, voted on by the district’s coaches.

Fort Chiswell earned the offensive and defensive player of the year awards, filled seven of the15 first-team offense positions, including four of the five offensive line spots, and seven of 14 first-team spots on defense, including offensive player of the year Chris Rodriguez (runningback) and defensive player of the year Hody Viars (linebacker). Galax didn’t fare too poorly itself after a 3-7 campaign as the Maroon Tide had names at nine first-team spots and eight second-team positions. Devae Goins, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound senior, and Deion George, a sophomore, were first-team picks on both sides of the ball. Goins, an offensive tackle and defensive end who is drawing interest from several Division I college programs, led the Maroon Tide in sacks with 10.5 and was second on the team with 92 tackles. Terrance Mazon, a junior, was the district’s top quarterback after passing for 1,353 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushing for another 472 yards and four scores. Fellow junior Jerad Brown was named the first-team kick returner, while George, a sophomore, earned first-team status as a receiver after catching 19 passes for 504 yards in just seven games. Grayson County’s Eric Harvey was the district’s leading receiver, earning the 6-3, 170-pound junior first-team honors. Harvey finished with an impressive 43 catches for 642 yards and four touchdowns. Grayson’s Jason Thompson is the first-team tight end. Goins was joined on the first-team defense by a trio of sophomores, including George, lineman Darius Brown and linebacker Jordan Vaughan. Leading tackler Tyler Newman, a junior with 105 tackles, is a first-team linebacker, while George, a defensive back, tied for the team lead with five interceptions. Grayson County’s Ryan Cummins is a first-team defensive end. Second-team offense picks from Galax included Darius Brown at guard, wideout Juan Ruiz, wideout Jerad Brown and Vaughan, a runningback who averaged 107 rushing yards per game in seven outings. Grayson’s second-team offense choices included runningback Omar Larreta and center Daniel Crawford. Earning spots on the second team defense were Galax’s Tyler Ward (line), Ruiz (linebacker), Jerad Brown (defensive back) and Mazon (defensive back), along with Grayson’s Thompson (linebacker).    ALL-MOUNTAIN EMPIRE DISTRICT FOOTBALL TEAM
