FLOYD –– Galax cut a 20-0  gap to six points in the third quarter but couldn’t complete the comeback and dropped a 33-14 nondistrict loss Friday to Floyd County.

Donte Peoples scored on runs of 5 and 2 yards as the Maroon Tide (1-1) pulled to within 20-14 entering the fourth quarter.

The Buffaloes (1-1) responded with a 51-yard touchdown pass from Matt Bary to Cole Worrell, and Dorian Harris iced the win with a 53-yard interception return.

Harris and Bary spotted Floyd County the 20-0 halftime lead. Harris scored on two short touchdown runs separated by a 26-yard touchdown pass from Bary to Brandon Simpkins.

Harris finished with 122 yards on 21 carries and Bary completed eight of his 15 passes for 146 yards.

Peoples rushed for 196 yards, but the Maroon Tide was just 1-of-11 passing for 2 yards and committed six turnovers.

The loss was Galax’s first regular season setback since October of 2010. The Maroon Tide will look to bounce back this week with a third straight nondistrict game against a Three Rivers District team, traveling to Eastern Montgomery for a 7 .m. kickoff Friday.
