Tide breaks through for first MED win

Galax snapped a seven-game slide and came away with its first district win of the year, rolling past Narrows 50-32 in a Mountain Empire District boys’ game Wednesday.

The Maroon Tide (2-12 overall, 1-4 district) jumped out to a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and took a 36-23 lead into the fourth quarter.

Steven Peoples led all scorers with 12 points for Galax, which got scoring contributions from 10 players.

Narrows (7-9, 0-5) was led by Rodney Perdue with 10 points.

Carroll County 65, Abingdon 61: The Cavaliers ran their winning streak to 16 games with a hard-fought Southwest District win Tuesday in Abingdon.

Carroll County (16-0, 5-0 SWD) trailed 57-54 with two minutes left but finished the game on an 11-4 run, with all the scoring done by Ryan Gravley and Gunnar Beamer.

The Cavaliers withstood a pair of 7-0 Abingdon runs in the third period to take a 48-47 lead into the fourth but trailed by as many as seven points before rallying for the win.

Gravley hit 14-of-16 free throws, including 7-of-8 in the fourth quarter, and finished with 28 points while Beamer added 10 points.

Mack Owens led Abingdon (13-5, 2-2) with 28 points and topped 1,000 points for his career. Josh Hess added 17 points for the Falcons.

Grayson County 59, Holston 32: The Blue Devils jumped out to a 27-13 lead by halftime and kept the Cavaliers winless with the nondistrict win Wednesday in Independence.

Madison Shupe and Camryn McGrady led the way for Grayson County (12-4). Shupe finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds while McGrady added 12 points and seven boards.

Presley Patrick scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Holston (0-14).

Carroll County 58, Abingdon 42: After a tough four-point win over the Falcons at home earlier in the month, the Cavaliers got it over with early in a SWD game Wednesday in Abingdon.

Carroll County took a nine-point lead into the second quarter and was ahead 35-19 by halftime.

Rachel Sellers scored 11 points and Machala Hash added 10 for the Cavaliers, who improved to 10-8 overall and 3-2 in the district with the win. 

Abingdon was led by Taylor Blevins, who scored 17 of her 21 points in the second half.
