Tide’s Wilson baffles Bland Co.

Grace Wilson flirted with perfection before settling for an 8-3 win in a Mountain Empire District softball game Tuesday at Mountain View Park.

Wilson did not allow a Bland County batter to reach base through the first five innings but lost the perfect game and the no-hitter when Lindsey Hylton led off the sixth with a single.

Galax led 8-0 at that point thanks to a quick start, taking an early lead on a two-run error in the first inning. Haley Reynolds added a two-run double in the second and scored on Harley Brewer’s double as the lead grew to 6-0.

Wilson struck out nine and walked two to earn the pitching win. Reynolds was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Brewer added two hits for Galax.

Radford 5, Galax 2: Rebecca Williams singled home a run in the third to put the Bobcats on top to stay as the Maroon Tide dropped a nondistrict decision Monday in Radford.

Haley Reynolds singled to drive in Channing Russell for a 1-0 Galax lead in the first, but Radford answered with two runs in its first at bat.

Harley Brewer tied the game with an RBI single in the third before Williams put the Bobcats on top for good.

Brewer, Jakara Robinson and Taylor Cummings had two hits each for Galax. 


Grayson Co. 8, Bland Co. 2: The Blue Devils scored three times in each the second and fourth innings to knock off the Bears in an MED game Tuesday in Bastian.

Nick Perkins allowed two runs in three innings to earn the win for Grayson County (5-3, 2-0), and Dustin Leonard pitched four hitless innings of relief. Leonard was 2-for-5 at the plate and Jared Salts had a pair of runs driven in.

Bland (4-8, 0-2) committed five errors.

Carroll Co 11, Marion 0: Blake Bowman and Brandon Lineberry accounted for seven hits and seven runs scored as the Cavaliers rolled to a five-inning Southwest District win Tuesday in Marion.

Lineberry was 4-for-4 with courtesy runner T.C. Vass scoring four runs. Lineberry was also the winning pitcher, scattering three hits and striking out seven.

Jordan Lamb slugged a three-run home run while Dillon Bryant and Morgan Edwards had two hits apiece for Carroll County (6-4, 4-0).

Galax 11, Independence, W.Va. 6: The Maroon Tide opened play in the Coppinger Invitational by answering a Patriots rally with one of their own Monday at Bowen Field in Bluefield.

Trailing 6-1, Independence tied the game with a five-run rally in the top of the fourth, but Galax got all five runs back in its next at-bat on two walks, two singles and a costly outfield error.

Travis Cockerham, Travis Garvey and Alex Larrowe each had two hits for the Maroon Tide, with Larrowe driving in four runs.

Jonathan Alouf allowed six runs on just two hits to pick up the win as Galax committed four errors.


Grayson Co. 9, Narrows 0: The Blue Devils stayed unbeaten on the year and improved to 3-0 in the district with an easy win Tuesday. Grayson County gave up more than two games in just one of the 18 sets played while improving to 8-0 on the year.

Garrett Bailey, Grayson Holdaway and the No. 1 doubles team of Bailey and Mike Vaughan all won 6-0, 6-0 matches. Vaughan, Jake Parnell, Mica Paluzzi and Ben Horton were also winners in singles for Grayson.

Grayson Co. 8, Fort Chiswell 1: The Blue Devils started their week with an MED win Monday in Max Meadows, winning five of the six singles matches.


Galax 5, Carroll County 4: The Maroon Tide’s Claire Engelhardt and Paige Hanks took a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles to give the Maroon Tide the deciding team point in a nondistrict match Tuesday at Felts Park.

The Maroon Tide’s Carahline Stark, Engelhardt, Susan Davis and Lindsey Ayers all won their singles matches, but the Cavaliers got wins from Lindsey Poe and Danni Daugherty, plus doubles wins from Poe and Cheyenne Webb at No. 1 along with Crysta Guynn and Megan Alderman at No. 3 to even things up.

Galax improved to 5-1 on the year.

Grayson Co. 9, Narrows 0: The Blue Devils upped their record to 7-0, 2-0 in the MED with the win Tuesday in Narrows.

Anna Turnmire took down Larissa Bragg 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Megan Finklea for a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Lucy Phipps, Laura Shearin, Finklea, Alisha Bost and Shannon Gamble all won singles matches, surrendering a total of four games.

Grayson Co. 9, Fort Chiswell 0: The Blue Devils lost just four games in the six singles matches in breezing to the MED win Friday in Independence.

Radford 9, Galax 0: The Tide suffered its first loss of the year, dropping a nondistrict match to the Bobcats Monday in Radford.

Galax 9, Fort Chiswell 0: The Maroon Tide picked up an MED win over the Pioneers last week, giving up three games or less in seven of the nine matches.
