Three former Twin County athletes were honored for their work on the courts as well as in the classroom recently by being named National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) volleyball scholar-athletes.
UVa.-Wise’s Megan Funk and Bluefield College’s Ashley Strickland and Alyssa Weddle were among the 387 players nationally who were recognized by the NAIA.
To be recognized, players must achieve junior status and maintain at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Funk, a junior from Fries and a Grayson County High School graduate, was second on the team with 162 kills for the Cavaliers while producing 24 blocks and 83 digs.
Strickland, a junior and a Carroll County graduate, had six service aces and 218 digs for the Lady Rams. Weddle, a senior from Carroll County, had 240 kills and a team-high 25 service aces.
