FANCY GAP — A tractor-trailer jackknifed around the southbound 2.4-mile marker on Interstate 77 Tuesday afternoon during heavy rain, causing another wreck involving two more tractor-trailers immediately after, according to Virginia State Police.

Trooper F.M. Cochran reported that a 2013 Freightliner driven by Bobby Gray Smith of North Carolina hit the guardrail and went into the median, partly blocking both lanes. There were no injuries.

Smith was charged with reckless driving and failure to control his vehicle. The initial accident happened around 2:50 p.m.

A 2015 Freightliner, driven by Melvin Wilson of Martinsville, stopped for Smith’s truck, but was hit from behind by a 2015 Volvo driven by George Buchheit of Gilbert, S.C.

Both trucks were coming southbound off the mountain, according to Trooper J.D. Delp, who worked the second accident. There were no injuries.

Buchheit was charged with following too closely by Delp. Buchheit’s truck was towed away. Wilson, whose trailer was damaged, was able to drive away.
