Three Twin County volleyball players earned spots on their respective Virginia High School Coaches Association all-state volleyball teams, which were released late last week.
Galax’s Allison White was named to the all-Group A second team, while Carroll County’s Maleah Neely and Honesty Rogers were honorable mention picks on the all-Group AA team. White, a sophomore middle hitter for the Maroon Tide, was one of only two 10th-graders named on either the first, second or honorable mention teams, joining Savanna Burton of Narrows. White helped lead Galax to an 18-5 record and to within a point of the Maroon Tide’s first-ever state tournament appearance, falling in five games to Radford in the Region C semifinals. White put away 349 kills during the season, finishing the year with a school-record 38 kills in the Radford loss. White served at a .970 rate and fired 49 aces among her 110 serving points and also dug 182 balls during the season. Her 38 kills in the regionals would place her second in the VHSL record books for the second-highest single-match kill total ever reported. Neely and Rogers, a pair of juniors, helped spearhead a Carroll County team that put together a 21-2 record, falling to Hidden Valley in the Region IV quarterfinals. A setter and outside hitter, Neely led Carroll County with 411 assists and 225 digs and also put away 177 kills, second-most on the team. Her 47 aces and 306 serving points were both team highs and she also had 37 blocks while maintaining a .955 serving percentage. As a libero, Rogers was second only to Neely with her 206 digs. She also had 23 aces among her 189 serving points. Region C was represented on the all-Group A first team by Chilhowie’s Krystal Patton and Bath County’s Hillary Jessee and Carey Trimble. Auburn’s Joelle Gross was a second-team selection. State champion Gate City provided the player of the year (Lindsey Burke) and coach of the year (Amy Reed). On the Group AA first team were Region IV’s Jocelyn Kellinger and Morgan Shannon of Cave Spring. Hidden Valley’s Sam Ringer was placed on the second team and Martinsville’s Grayce Darden was an honorable mention pick. Loudon County hitter Juliane Hanna and coach Jared Brown earned the top honors after their state championship season.
