Thomas, Cavaliers near perfect

 MARION –– Carroll County blew open a tight game with a six-run seventh inning and Rebecca Thomas flirted with perfection as the Cavaliers took an 8-0 win over Marion in a Southwest District softball game Thursday.

Thomas retired the first 20 batters she faced until Brooke Pennington reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Thomas still finished with a no-hitter, striking out 14 of the 22 batters she faced.

The Cavaliers took the lead for good in the top of the first on base hits by Grace Ayers, Lillie Kimble, Lexi Hodge and Megan Snow.

The score stood at 2-0 until the top of the seventh. With two outs and none on, Kimble and Hodge had consecutive doubles, followed by a hit batter and a walk. Nikki Hawks drove in a run and Ayers added an RBI single.

Ayers and Kimble each collected four hits on the day while Hodge was 3-for-4. Hawks and Leanna Rippey added two hits apiece.

Floyd County 4, Grayson County 1: Amber Ingram struck out 11 and gave up just five hits as the Buffaloes won a nondistrict game Thursday in Floyd.

Floyd County broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.


Galax 9, Grayson County 0: The Maroon Tide improved to 7-0 in the district with a Thursday sweep of the Blue Devils in Independence.

Stuart Garland overcame a first-set tiebreaker loss to rally for a three-set win over Willie Lund at No. 2 singles. Matt Nelson, Bryan Martin, Rob Guynn, Pres Cardwell and Ethan Smith all won singles matches in straight sets.

Galax ran its overall record to 12-2 with the win. BOYS’ SOCCER

Fort Chiswell 4, Grayson County 1: Ricky Sanchez scored the Blue Devils’ only goal in an MED loss Thursday in Independence.

Dakota Mabe had two goals for the Pioneers, who also got goals from Storm Bond and Guiseppe Calo.


Richlands 3, Carroll County 0 (5 innings): The Blue Tornado avenged last week’s 9-8 loss to the Cavaliers with a rain-shortened SWD win Thursday in Wardell.

Taylor Sizemore blanked the Cavaliers on five hits, while Bradley Strong and Joel Elswick each had two hits for Richlands.
