Team's honors were ignored

The Gazette has given excellent coverage to the Galax High School golf team's state championship, the Galax football team's winning season and rise through the playoffs and the Galax volleyball team going to state for the first time.

However, the same does not apply to the Galax cross country team.

The Gazette printed a very nice article on the district meet, which was held Oct. 27. After that, The Gazette totally ignored the team's accomplishments.

Both girls and boys teams advanced to regionals at Giles on Nov. 4. The boys placed third with two boys taking all-region honors.

Travis Cockerham and Kevin Loftin placed second and sixth, respectively, with just a few hundredths of a second separating them from first and fifth. This is the sixth year in a row the boys have gone to state.

The girls placed fourth, advancing to state for the first time since 2001. At the state meet on Nov. 13, both girls and boys teams placed seventh, with Travis Cockerham taking all state honors with an eighth place finish.

The parents know how hard these kids have trained to achieve these honors. The wonderful coaches, Tony Quesenberry and Mary Jane Ballard, have worked extremely hard to bring the kids to this level of performance.

The public should be made aware of the cross country team honors through timely articles in The Gazette, not by a parent writing a letter to the editor.
