HILLSVILLE — A suspect has been arrested in connection with the Dec. 16 armed robbery at the Kangaroo Express in Fancy Gap.
Joey Roby Sechrist, 48, of Brushy Fork Road in Cana, is charged with armed robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Carroll County deputies and Virginia State Police troopers scoured Interstate 77 and other areas of Carroll County after receiving a report that the business on Chances Creek Road had been robbed.
An employee told authorities that a six-foot-tall white male wearing coveralls and a black ski mask entered the store, locked the door behind him and told her to turn off the lights, according to Carroll Sheriff Warren Manning.
When the employee asked him what he wanted, the man showed her a silver semi-automatic pistol, according to the report.
The subject went to the video room and took all the video surveillance recording system.
The subject also asked the employee to open the safe, from which he took and unknown amount of money. He also stole lottery tickets, cigarettes and beer from the store.
The employee told authorities the subject left in a white SUV, but she did not get a make or see the license plate.
Manning said Thursday that, after a week-long investigation, evidence led investigators to Sechrist first as a person of interest, then as a suspect.
Investigators Fred Bobbitt, Donnie Spangler and Shannon Goad obtained warrants on Dec. 22. Bobbitt arrested Sechrist without incident at his home in Cana.
Sechrist is being held without bond in the New River Valley Regional Jail, pending arraignment in Carroll General District Court.
