The car accident that resulted in the death of Pamela Slate appeared to be speed-related, said Virginia State Trooper Alan Vaughan.
Slate, 44, of Carsonville Road in Independence, was killed last Monday afternoon after the 2000 Firebird she was driving struck a utility pole on Edmonds Road, south of Galax.
Vaughan said Slate appeared to be going too fast for the condition of the road. It had rained that afternoon.
Slate lost control of her car, ran off the side of the road, overcorrected and hit a utility pole head-on, breaking the pole in half.
Passersby pulled Slate from the car before emergency workers arrived and began CPR.
Emergency workers attempted to revive her on the way to Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, said Vaughan. However, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
