Defending champions come up short after late rally by Wakefield in title game.

ROANOKE –– The State Line Rush returned to the championship game but couldn’t defend its title, falling 50-48 to Wakefield in the Jingle Ball Tournament Saturday at North Cross School.

State Line (13-3) and Wakefield (8-3) took turns hammering one another a quarter at a time as the Rush opened a 14-7 first-quarter lead but trailed 27-22 by halftime. State Line surged into a 37-30 lead by outscoring Wakefield 15-3 in the third quarter but couldn’t hold off a Wakefield rally and came up two points short of repeating as tournament champions.
