Grayson County 8, Floyd 7

Tina Vaughan homered twice to bring Grayson County back from the brink of elimination and Megan Funk drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Blue Devils rallied for an 8-7 win over Floyd County in the Region C softball quarterfinals Tuesday at B.A. Rhudy Fields.

Chelsea Link’s three-run home run in the third inning boosted the Buffaloes to a 6-0 lead by the middle of the fifth inning. Grayson County cut the gap to 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but Amber Ingram’s solo shot stretched Floyd’s lead to 7-2 in the sixth.

Fueled by Vaughan, the Devils came to life. The senior catcher slammed a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to give Grayson a spark. Trailing 7-3 in the seventh, Kayla Spurlin singled and scored on Funk’s base hit, and Vaughan followed with a game-tying three-run home run.

Spurlin retired the Buffaloes in order in the top of the eighth, and in the bottom half, Lindsey Burris and Spurlin singled and Caitlin Anderson walked. Funk’s shot past the third baseman brought Burris home with the winning run.

Vaughan was 4-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the Devils, who played James River in the region semifinals Thursday in Christiansburg. Funk and Spurlin were each 3-for-5. Spurlin got the pitching win, improving to 7-0.

Blacksburg 9, Carroll County 4

The Indians used the long ball to get past the Cavaliers in the Region IV first round Monday in Blacksburg.

Joey Phillips was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the first inning. Trey Gresh hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Greg Juanarena smacked a solo homer in the sixth inning.

Carroll County (13-12) cut a 6-0 deficit to 6-4 with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Cody Robinson had an RBI single in the fourth and a two-run double in the fifth.

Blacksburg improved to 16-7 with the win.

Cave Spring 7, Carroll County 0

Rachel Beaumont recorded three goals and two assists and Sara Walton chipped in with one goal and three assists as the Knights (12-5-1) downed the Cavaliers Monday in the Region IV first round.

Galax 2, Giles 0

Dio Rodriguez headed in a Jorge Mendez corner kick to give the Maroon Tide the lead for good in the Region C quarterfinals Tuesday in Galax. Edu Rojas scored Galax’s second goal as the Maroon Tide improved to 18-0-1.

Giles had defeated Galax in the region semifinals a year ago, and was the only blemish on this year’s record, earning a tie early in the season.

Region C tournament

Radford junior Malik Mubeen defeated Matt Nelson of Galax 6-3, 6-0 to win the Region C singles championship Tuesday at Felts Park.

Nelson reached the title match by cruising past Jake Fowler of Parry McCluer 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals, while Mubeen dropped George Wythe’s Keith Edwards 6-0, 6-1.

Nelson and G Zachary won their doubles semifinal, also on Tuesday, sweeping the Parry McCluer team of Fowler and Robey 6-0, 6-0. Mubeen and Sanjay Kishore, the Group A runners-up last year, blanked Edwards and Harrison of George Wythe 6-0, 6-0.

The doubles final as well as the team semifinals were scheduled for Wednesday, weather permitting.
