Smith, Loftin take River Run wins

 FRIES –– Carley Smith and Kevin Loftin were the individual winners while Galax swept the team competitions at the Grayson County River Run cross country meet, held Wednesday.

Smith built a one-minute, 24-second lead over the field by the completion of the 5K run, finishing with a time of 20:28. Megan Boyles of Galax was second in 21:52 and Elise Zyvlosky of Carroll County took third in 22:41.

Hannah Hadaway (Rural Retreat), Layken Parks (Grayson County), Lindsey Ayers (Galax), Erika Largen (Fort Chiswell), Virginia Reasor (Rural Retreat), Lindsey Brumfield (Carroll County) and Olivia Wyatt (Grayson County) completed the top 10.

Galax finished with 37 team points to edge Grayson County by three points for the win. Rural Retreat was third with 51.

In the boys’ race, Loftin led a contingent of five Maroon Tide runners among the top 13, posting a winning time of 18:07. Tyler Pauley of Grayson County was second in 18:26 and Galax’s Justin Ayers placed third in 18:28.

Galax also had strong finishes from Trevor Quesenberry (sixth), Dyllan Taylor (seventh) and Dustin Matthews (13th) to finish with 30 points, 21 points ahead of Grayson County. Carroll County (72), Bland County (93) an Rural Retreat (117) rounded out the field.

Carroll County was led by Kendall Haynes in fourth place with a time of 18:29. He was trailed by Joshua Goodman of Bland County, Quesenberry and Taylor, John Farmer of Rural Retreat and Adam Wyatt of Grayson County.

Zack Cockerham (Carroll), Jose Sanchez (Grayson) and Nathan Smith (Carroll) were the top three finishers in the two-mile boys’ middle school run, while the top three in the girls’ middle school race consisted of Sophie Webb and Gracie Puckett of Carroll County and Emma Wyatt of Grayson County.

VOLLEYBALL

Grayson County held off Rural Retreat for three games and took a nondistrict volleyball match in Independence, winning 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 Wednesday night.

Madison McCormick put up 22 assists to go with 14 service points (including three aces) and seven digs. Brandi Goad had 34 assists, Erin Barrett had six kills and Catherine Vaughan added five kills, five digs and nine points.

Becca Johnson served for four aces and put down six kills, while Tayler Hale chipped in with five kills and seven digs.
