BUCHANAN –– Grayson County’s early-game woes continued Tuesday as James River pounced on the Blue Devils for seven first-inning runs, rolling to a 14-5 win in the Region C baseball quarterfinals Tuesday at James River High School.
Other than a scoreless start in its final regular season game, the Blue Devils have given up an average of 4.4 runs in the first inning of their last six games.
James River coupled seven hits with two errors to take control early on Tuesday, and Ryan Hepler added a solo home run in the second for an 8-0 lead for the Knights (15-6).
The lead was 13-0 when the Blue Devils took advantage of a vanished strike zone to score five times in the sixth. Five walks, a hit batter, an RBI single from Justin Leonard and a Reece Phipps sacrifice fly did the damage for Grayson County, whose season ends at 16-7.
Galax 7, Bath County 0: The Maroon Tide advanced into Thursday’s semifinal round with an easy win over the Chargers Tuesday in Galax.
Galax (13-5-1) continued its onslaught against opposing goalkeepers, outshooting Bath County 25-4. The Maroon Tide has owned a 98-9 advantage on shots attempted in its last three games.
Junior Espinoza scored a pair of goals against Bath County while Galax also got goals from Jose Martinez, Tyler Bowen, Andres Medina, Edu Rojas and Leanel Vega.
Galax faced George Wythe for a spot in the Group A tournament Thursday in Buena Vista.
Blacksburg 13, Carroll County 0: The Bruins got goals from 10 different players in whacking the Cavaliers in the Region IV quarterfinals Monday in Blacksburg. Will Hopkins led Blacksburg with three goals.
