Scorching second half lifts Devils past Alleghany

SPARTA, N.C. –– Grayson County made it 4-for-4 for the Virginia boys, knocking off host Alleghany 65-53 in the Cross Border Shootout Tuesday night.

The Blue Devils and Galax both went 2-0 in the event. Grayson County shot nearly 80 percent from the floor in the second half, hitting 19 of 24 attempts to pull away from a 22-21 halftime lead.

Eric Harvey led Grayson County with 19 points and Tyler Rutherford scored 13 of his 16 after halftime.

Cody Miller led all scorers with 20 points for the Trojans and Julian McNeil added 17.

The Blue Devils enjoyed one of their better nights offensively, but it wasn’t enough to overcome four double-digit performances by the Trojans in a 73-51 losslast Tuesday in the Cross Border Shootout at Alleghany High School.

Devin Osborne pumped in 15 points and Kayla Spurlin added 10 points for the Blue Devils (1-9), but Celeste Caudill tossed in 14 points in the first half for Alleghany, which took a 36-19 halftime lead.

Caudill would finish with a game-high 23 points for the Trojans (7-2). Molly Grubb scored 12 points, Kennedy Gambill added 11 points and six assists and Karly Souther contributed 10 points.

The host Lady Bears used a balanced scoring attack Monday to defeat the Cavaliers in the first day of the Granite City Classic.

Mount Airy (6-2) got a team-high 12 points from Maggie McKee, 11 points from Ellie Case and 10 points from Taylor Hiatt. The Bears opened up with a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and took a 49-24 lead into the fourth quarter.

Kayla Goins led all scorers with 14 points for the Cavaliers (3-3), who played East Surry, N.C. on Tuesday.
