RV fire was potentially explosive

Happened Thursday at 11:30 a.m. on Interstate 77



HILLSVILLE — Hillsville Fire Department members answered a call on Interstate 77 Thursday that photographer David Young said "was literally a ticking time bomb." 

The 11:30 a.m. incident involved an RV and trailer burning near the 19 mile marker.

A member of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office reported from the scene a racing team with a trailer that the racing car and racing fuel inside, Young said.

The deputy told the dispatcher warn the firefighters of what they were facing.

"The traffic was stopped on I-77 South for about 30 minutes so the fire department could do their job, no injuries to anyone, which was a miracle in its on," Young said.

The Virginia State Police are investigating the fire.

The driver of the camper told Young he thought it was a rupture fuel line that caused the fire.
