By Staff Reports

The State Line Rush girls’ homeschool basketball team of Galax finished the 2011-2012 season with a record of 24-18, finishing second in the Virginia Homeschool Athletic Association state tournament in Fairfax and competing in the East Coast National Tournament at Liberty University in March.

The Rush entered the state tournament at George Mason University as the No. 3 seed with a 5-1 conference record, with league wins over the Albemarle Cougars, the Front Royal Flames, the Richmond Spirit and the Virginia Beach Breakers. Their only conference loss came to their closest geographic rival, the Blue Ridge Panthers of Hillsville.

In the state tournament, the Rush took down Albemarle in first round play, 37-25. The semifinal game featured an exciting rematch between the Rush and the second-seeded Blue Ridge Panthers, with the Rush avenging its regular season loss by taking a 48-39 victory. The championship game then pitted the Rush against the undefeated Fairfax Firebirds.  Fairfax prevailed, defeating the Rush 65-27.

The team then completed its 2011-2012 season with an impressive performance in Lynchburg at the East Coast National Tournament.  When the girls’ varsity pool play games were completed the Rush had compiled a 2-1 record, defeating the Easley, S.C., Guardians 37-28 and the Central Virginia Patriots of Richmond 36-21, and losing to the eventual 5A tournament champion Forsyth, N.C., Hawks 59-35.

Earning the top seed in the 3A bracket, the Rush defeated the Gwinnett Barons of Atlanta, Ga., 51-45 in semi-final play. This win sent the Rush on a return trip to the Liberty University Vines Center to play in the 3A championship game against the Low Country Wildcats of Charleston, S.C.  The Wildcats defeated the Rush 54-33, and the Rush finished with a tournament ranking of 10th among the 20 East Coast opponents.

The State Line Rush 2011-12 schedule included many private and homeschool teams in the Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee area, playing in numerous weekend tournaments and jamborees.  The team also won the 2011 Christmas Classic Tournament in Kernersville, N.C.

“Our ladies have worked hard and have played some great ball this year,” said head coach Larry Clark. “They give their best everywhere they go.  We are already looking forward to next season.”

State Line Rush team members are Victoria Bartlett, Rebekah Bennett, Morgan Brown, Audrey Clark, Daisy Clark, Kate Clark, Nancy Clark, Rachel Clark, Bryanna Lindberg and Kacie Shaffner.
