HILLSVILLE — Authorities scoured Interstate 77 and other areas of Carroll County Thursday evening after a report of an armed robbery at the Kangaroo Express in Fancy Gap.Carroll County deputies and Virginia State Police troopers responded to the business on Chances Creek Road after the report came in at 8:35 p.m., Sheriff Warren Manning said.
An employee told the authorities that a six-foot-tall white man wearing coveralls and a black ski mask entered the store and locked the door behind him, the sheriff said. He asked her to turn off the lights.When the employee asked him what he wanted, the man showed her a silver semi-automatic pistol, according to the report. After she turned off the lights, the subject asked her to go get the video out of the surveillance camera.
The man went to the video room and took all the video recording system.The subject also asked the employee to open the safe, which she replied would take 10 minutes, according to the report.
While they waited, the man told her to open the lottery machine and get all the tickets.The safe did open, and the subject took an unknown amount of money, according to the report. He also took cigarettes and beer from the store.
The employee told authorities the subject left in a white SUV, but she did not get a make or see the license plate."It's right off the interstate, so 99 percent chance he's traveling," Manning said.
