UPDATED: The Galax-Grayson EMS, Virginia State Police, Galax Fire Department and Grayson Sheriff's Office all responded to a one-vehicle accident on Riverside Drive in Grayson County at around 2:45 p.m. Monday.

The vehicle's male driver was the sole victim involved, according to Virginia State Trooper Jessie Tilson.

The victim was identified as 45-year-old Ellis Burton Leonard, Jr. He was taken from the scene by ambulance and then transported by helicopter. A landing zone was set up at Mountainview Park in Galax.

The vehicle, a red 2003 Toyota Camry, had collided head-on with a guard rail on the end of the bridge and was totaled. It had not apparently crossed a lane to do so. The front of the car was crumpled, along with a section of guardrail.

The fire department arrived to help remove the victim from the car, but no special equipment was required.

Tilson said the cause of the accident was still unknown, but there were no skid marks at or leading to the scene, and Leonard did not smell of alcohol.

According to Tilson, Leonard was unresponsive at the scene and is still said to be unreponsive. Tilson said that as of Monday, Leonard was in intensive care at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
