HILLSVILLE — A new restaurant owner hopes people will flip over the fare offered at Mile High Burger Co.
The new business located at 145 N. Main St. offers “the classic” and five specialty burgers, garden salad, chicken Philly and hot dogs.
The question on side orders will likely be, “Do you want fries with that — considering you also have a choice of hand-breaded onion rings, fried pickles or fried mushrooms?”
Owner Mel Barfield, a native of Kernersville, N.C., wants to make his food at least as good as the first meal he ever had at a restaurant.
It was at a place that Barfield’s uncle took him on a break from working on his chicken farm, he recalled. At the age of 12, he had never been to a restaurant in his life.
He admitted to being somewhat confused about how to order at Ken’s Grill, so he asked his cousin to do it for him.
What showed up on his plate was a chili burger with mustard and onions, which Barfield still remembers to this day.
“That’s what the inspiration was for Mile High Burger Co. — to try to be that good,” he said.
The venture in Hillsville tops a 35-year career in food service. He worked as a director of operations for a franchise group with Golden Corral.
The job used to take him through Mount Airy, N.C., and up Interstate 77 every week.
“I really feel in love with the area,” Barfield said. “It’s beautiful up here. It kind of reminds me of the town I grew up in, you know... This is just so me right here — it’s laid-back, good folks.”
Barfield opened a Golden Corral in Mount Airy and spent the last couple years with Lone Star Steakhouse.
Retired from that job, he hopes the Hillsville location of Mile High Burger is just the first in a local chain. He also would like to open up places in Galax and other nearby towns, if successful.
His certified Angus beef gets patted out on site. In addition to the classic, patrons can also choose from the “Road House” with barbecue sauce, bacon and an onion ring; the “Tear Jerker” with jalapenos and pepper jack cheese; the Philly burger with grilled mushrooms, onions and Swiss; the “Black and Blue” with blue cheese and bacon; and the “Mile High Burger” with slaw, chili, mustard and onions.
The restaurant’s mission statement involves serving the best burger possible and providing a great experience to the people of Hillsville and beyond.
“Our job is to deliver a meal that’s above and beyond their imagination,” Barfield said.
