There's a large possibility my husband, daughter and I will be relocating to the Galax area from the Roanoke area. I've been perusing all the Galax/Grayson County websites and I must say, I have fallen in love with the area and I've not even visited it yet. One thing that stood out to me, while a minor detail to some, were the sidewalks in town. My daughter requires a wheelchair, and I'm always noticing whether I'll be able to let her enjoy everything the general population does.
We'll initially be looking for a rental house, but I can see us eventually purchasing a house and making our home there. I'm hoping to visit within the next week or so and look around.....
So tell me, if we move there, will we be "Galaxians" or "Galaxers"? Either way, I'll be proud to say I'm a resident in such a fine area.
Im 31 and single and about to move to Galax. Im coming from a college town home of the Hogs in Arkansas. I do like beautiful countryside and outdoor activities. A concern I have is meeting people my own age who have similar interests. Does the town have a fitness center, theatre, etc. Where do people go on the weekends? The job Im taking there seems like it will be a great opportunity for me I just concerned about the social aspect of living there.
Seth . . . . . Its gonna be hard
My first tip for you is to go for a rental unit to deposit your stuff and then search for a house, it will be much easier for you to face the relocation process. I had an office relocation in Galax and it wasn't too difficult to adapt. The place is really nice if you're into countryside landscapes.
Welcome to the boonies...
Don't do it. Galax suuuuuucks.
Galax is a great little community. We do have a movie theater, skating rink (etc) and tons of Outdoor Recreation as well as regional festivals and musical events. I have been working hard with clients in the tourism industry for years now. You just have to be willing to accept that not everything is inside the Galax city limits like it is in a bigger city. When you live in a small town, you have a few cool things here, and then a broad spectrum of things in the small towns surrounding you. We share a similar heritage and culture and this is a wonderful place to live whether you are single or married with kids. There are several nice restaurants in Galax, and really cool places to shop downtown. For more area attractions look at the Carroll County (a shared community!) website: Visittheblueridge.com or check VisitGalax.com. Best of luck in your transplant here. And all I can say is that if you hear people say it sucks, or its boring or there is nothing to do, they just don't realize yet the treasures we have in our own backyard! I've been here since 2002 and love it. And I grew up in the area years and years before that.
