BLUEFIELD –– Patrick Henry-Glade Spring jumped out to a 17-3 lead in and ended Grayson County’s season with a 54-39 defeat in the Region C Division 2 semifinals Thursday at Graham Middle School.

The Rebels (18-8) earned their third straight trip to the state tournament, denying Grayson County its first.

Patrick Henry faced Floyd County for the region title Saturday night.

The Rebels led 17-8 at halftime as the Blue Devils (20-6) made only three field goals in the game’s first 16 minutes. PH wasn’t much better, scoring only four points in the second quarter on a pair of field goals.

“I think both teams are young. We’re made up of mostly sophomores and juniors. I think they were just a little excited when they started,” PH head coach Tommy Thomas said of the game’s slow start.

“We were a little tight and nervous early tonight,” Grayson County coach Tiny Funk said. “We couldn’t get the ball to go in the basket and we turned the ball over. I was worried about that.”

Both teams scored more in the third quarter than they did in the first and second combined. Grayson County got as close as 21-14 when Madison Shupe knocked down a jumper with 5:47 left in the third. PH, however, responded with five straight points and Grayson County never got closer.

Shupe ended the night as Grayson County’s leading scorer with 13 points.

Jaymee Copenhaver led the Rebels with 17 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Kasey Uecker had 11 points and five assists and Morgan Yarber scored 14.
