Warm but not dangerous
I’m a teacher at Carroll County High School and I have to say there are big problems over there. Ceiling tiles still aren’t in, so all the duct work is exposed for those kids. Plus, there is no ventilation, so all the doors have to stay open, which is a security concern. This school is not ready to be opened but the administration is pushing it forward and I think they are just putting all the kids and all the teachers at risk. I hope someone looks in to that because school is going to be starting here soon and it is just a big mess over at that high school.
Editor’s note: Carroll County School Board members discussed this matter at their Aug. 13 meeting, which also happened to be the first day of school. Superintendent Strader Blankenship noted that building inspectors looked at the state of the heating and air conditioning updates at high school before opening and declared it a safe way to proceed. School officials noted that it is hot in the building and discussed possible solutions for cooling it off. Educators had previously said school had to commence on schedule, despite the project.
I noticed driving along the four-lane in to Galax the other week that they were taking down and putting up new guardrail. Just wondering what they do with the old guardrail. I know a road up in Independence, Klondike Road, has some pretty steep cliffs off and curves and I know school buses go up that road. Sure could use some guardrails along the side of that. Wish people wouldn’t wait until someone goes off and is killed and then they put up a guardrail later. Let’s prevent it ahead of time. Instead of scrapping it, use it somewhere it is needed.
I hope the ones running for office this fall will announce who they voted for in the presidential election. It would definitely help me decide whom I vote for. It would tell me how much sense they have.
One day sooner
Carroll County School officials, please do a better job next year before school starts. Don’t schedule open house for the high schoolers one day before school starts. Try to schedule it at least two to three days before. It is not fair that all the other county schools have theirs two days before school starts and the high schoolers have to wait and have theirs one day before school starts. It’s not right.
To the Carilion doctors’ office, want you to know the receptionists downstairs and up are the best. Hope you guys at Carilion realize what you have. When you are sick and go to their offices, you feel better already because they are so friendly and treat you as you should be treated. Keep up the good work. We really appreciate you from the bottom of our hearts and God bless each of you.
People that kidnap children or adults needs the death penalty right off the bat. No beans about it. Give them the death penalty. They are no good to start with.
Pulling long shifts
This is in response to “not so nice.” While I do not condone nurses and aides being rude to residents and families in a nursing home, I think I can shed some light on why. They are overworked, especially on second shift and weekends. They have employees to call out and the ones that are there are having to work 12-hour shifts on short notice. To say they are short on employees to care for residents is something that needs to be addressed. The staff that are having to pull these long shifts are tired and unhappy about the situation. It is important for families to be involved and express their concern to the administration.
Out of my way
I would like to know when Carico Bridge is going to be reopened. When you go through Fries, people can’t drive. They don’t know how to drive over 35 miles per hour. Just because they don’t have to work doesn’t mean other people don’t need to get to work.
These environmentalists work against everyone that’s trying to get a job.
This is concerning Front Street, the Galax street that runs between the elementary school and the high school. The sidewalks are broken and uneven and unsafe. One elderly lady was injured as a result. A grant to fix them to make them safer for school children was used up for planning. Sure was expensive planning. The school informs me they provide parking lots for students. The last school year, Front Street was full of students parking. The majority of residents on this street are elderly and/or disabled. If they dare to go out for anything, when they come home, there is no telling where they will have to park and carry groceries or purchases. Some cars sit there until 5 or 6 p.m. Something needs to be done about the conditions of the forgotten Front Street.
Editor’s note: It’s not accurate to say the grant was “used up” for planning instead of construction, as planning was one of the intended purposes of the funds. The city received a grant to plan improvements to streets around Galax schools as a first phase, and some funding to fix sidewalks. Additional grants will be needed to do the rest of work.
I think it is very stupid for Channel 7 to bring breaking news in and all they do is cut the program off you are watching, and bringing breaking news that they are going to report on at 12 o’clock anyway.
If they were to stop delivering mail on Saturday, you would be lucky to get your mail by Tuesday or Wednesday. Monday’s mail is always late anyway.
Since Galax put up all these speed traps, I hardly go to Galax anyway. It has always been a speed trap, ever since I can remember. Going to go less now. I go around the City of Galax.
Celebrations for all
I’m calling in reference to the festival suggestions. If we are going to have a gay pride day, why not have a sex offender day and an alcoholics anonymous day where all the alcoholics can come out and have a parade and the sex offenders can come out and have a parade and celebrate what they stand for.
If you are a woman, would you take it as strange if you went to your dryer and discovered men’s underwear out in your dryer? How would they get there, and no one there wore that style. That’s really something to study about. Should it be a joke or a questionable situation?
In response to the festival suggestion, we would like to keep it family friendly. We don’t want our kids seeing men kissing men and women kissing women at these things. So, if you really want a gay pride day, go to California.
Hiding in the bushes
Beware Galax, Virginia is a speed trap. The cops are in every nook, crack and corner there is. Even in the bushes. When I go to Galax, I travel the side roads like Glendale Road, Country Club Lane and other side roads. It’s sad the city wants money that bad. Galax used to be a nice place to live. Not anymore.
