Help Galax succeed
Making it in the restaurant business is hard. It is even harder to open one in a town like Galax. I love the town and I love that new businesses like Scoots are coming in. However, we all know that the wonderful people of Galax support a new business for about six months and then you hear crickets. Maybe it’s because the business was not based upon $2 hamburgers in a smoky bar or attached to a wealthy owner that can afford to take off an entire month for vacation. Whatever, I have the realization that supporting local means supporting other Galax inhabitants that are trying to make it in a struggling economy. In causing these businesses to shut down, it hurts the town more than it does the owners. Why do you think more people are moving away? We need to revitalize Galax instead of letting it fail.
If the people are complaining about you stinking, you really need to clean yourself up, because you are really affecting the people that have to work around you and smell you.
Editor’s note: Once again, I must caution the news staff to stop calling The Hotline.
Trash left behind
I am a member of the Iron Ridge community and they have trash cleanup on the side of the roads by Midway Baptist Church youth group. Who do you call to pick up bags of trash on the side of the road? Although those have been picked up, they have left six or eight bags.
Making arrests and keeping the peace are not always the same thing. The Grayson County sheriff has started sending news photos of people they arrest. Two of them had charges dropped and he still sent pictures to be published. This is not justice. Learn what makes a valid arrest.
Editor’s note: It’s possible that charges against the two people you mention were dropped between the time we received the photos from the sheriff’s department and the time we published them. We do check with the courts to see if the people named in arrest reports are found guilty or innocent. Sometimes, it takes a while for those decisions to show up in the court records, but we have been publishing the outcomes of those cases.
I can’t understand why I work at a place and the water boiler blows up and all of a sudden everybody is off work. Now I have to work on Saturday so I have to make up for lost time. That ain’t right.
Editor’s note: We can empathize, but there may be many among the 11.7 million unemployed Americans who would trade places with you.
Try the Golden Rule
Is this you? Do you find unfounded flaws with everything you see? Do you find baseless fault with everyone you come in contact with? Do you complain about all things touching your life? Do you write things that aren’t true to make you feel better? Bullying people only shows your true character. This universe does not revolve around you. Some things may not go the way that pleases you. You are not the center of attention. Look at your actions and look in the mirror. What you see may be what is causing the problem. Consider your many failings before making groundless accusations about others. Here is a thought. Treat others as you want to be treated.
Need to be educated
In response to “prisoners’ benefits,” the caller said if they had been educated to start with, they wouldn’t have been there. I only have an eighth grade education. I’ve never been in prison. I don’t get in trouble. I go to church. I was raised in an alcoholic home — beaten and everything else while growing up. But, I do not get myself in trouble. Never been in prison. Some people with an education need to be educated. It is not only the uneducated that get sent to prison. It seems there are quite a few highly educated and wealthy people that go to prison.
Many without jobs
I am calling in regard to the consistent comments on the people who owe back taxes. People in our area need to understand that there are many, many people without jobs and our taxes are probably delayed in getting to the tax office because we don’t have jobs. We are not making money to pay the taxes.
From the old timers
I was reading the article that if you hang a chicken around dogs, it trains them to kill chickens and I read that your article that you asked people and it says it trains them to fight with other dogs. I never heard such nonsense. The old timers used to hang a chicken around a dog’s neck if they killed chickens and if you hang the chicken around its neck, it would keep them from killing more chickens. The dog would get so sick of the chicken hanging around its neck that it wouldn’t kill chickens anymore. Dogs aren’t humans. They are put on earth for companionship for humans.
Editor’s note: No more calls will be published about the dogs-and-chickens topic unless there is new information involved.
I would like to give a special praise and thank you to the soup kitchen for its kindness with the free food and all they do for people around here. There are a few people in this world that will stop people from having other food sent to them and because of them, they used to be able to send over food to an apartment building and some of us weren’t able to get over there because of things that came up. Now, because of four individuals and their attitudes, the soup kitchen doesn’t come over. That’s pitiful. Again, I want to thank the soup kitchen for all they are doing. It is not their fault we have individuals in this world that will be cruel to others.
Pros, not cons
I have always thought The Gazette was a kind of upscale paper for our area. Did a great job reporting on the local news. But, when you start putting pictures of inmates who have been arrested recently in the paper, let’s do something different. Let’s find people who have lived in our community and donated time and volunteered and did something good and write a story and put their pictures in the paper and not give any inmates or prisoners or people who have broke the law any more publicity. Let’s find somebody like Betty Geisler and all the times she donated to 4-H, or Bill Carrico and what he does for the community, or a story about a volunteer. Not cons. Come on Gazette, what are you doing?
I’m calling about the hallucinating man or woman in the Hotline. I sure am glad he saw all this stuff, too, because I was afraid I was the only one that saw it. I think Spider-Man was down there, too. Hang in there. Stay out of the gas.
