-A A +A

Food rules
I don’t know who came up with the ignorant rule that you can’t share food at school and throw away good food when someone else is hungry. That makes no sense. When I went to school we could share all the time, like if we didn’t like something maybe someone else did. Whoever makes these rules needs to be put out and somebody put in there that has a brain.
Editor’s note: This rule is new to us, and pretty ridiculous. I remember having to lick my brownie just so some bully wouldn’t “share” it right off my lunch tray back in third grade.

Use a leash
Just wanted to give a little friendly warning to whoever has the dogs out on Double Cabin Road in Dugspur that if they are not handled, we will call the pet control. Cute little tan dogs, always getting in the road and almost getting hit every time. You need to control your animals.
Editor’s note: If they keep getting hit, the problem might take care of itself.

Messing around
After reading the comment, “hope for Herman [Cain],” I am amazed the guy didn’t offer more about the history of our politicians. Right now we have [a candidate, Newt Gingrich, whose wife had cancer in 1980]. He asked for a divorce while she was in the hospital. He married another woman. After he divorced her she had a sickness. The same time Bill Clinton was messing around with Monica, this guy was messing around with another lady there in the White House. When Bill got caught, he ran and got married again. Newt is known to be a woman chaser. Herman didn’t have a chance because he is not qualified. He doesn’t have the charisma and experience that Newt has.
Editor’s note: Speaker Gingrich’s daughter from his first marriage wrote recently that her mother asked for the divorce, and that the Gingrich children were not told about it in a hospital setting. From the column published by Creators Syndicate: “My parents told my sister and me that they were getting a divorce as our family of four sat around the kitchen table of our ranch home… Later that summer, Mom went to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta for surgery to remove a tumor. While she was there, Dad took my sister and me to see her. It is this visit that has turned into the infamous hospital visit about which many untruths have been told. I won’t repeat them. You can look them up online if you are interested in untruths. …My mother and father were already in the process of getting a divorce, which she requested. Dad took my sister and me to the hospital to see our mother. She had undergone surgery the day before to remove a tumor. The tumor was benign. As with many divorces, it was hard and painful for all involved, but life continued. As have many families, we have healed; we have moved on.”

Fire away
I know it is a state law that you have to have a hunting license to kill animals, but if I had any land, I would let people hunt on it and shoot for free because as many accidents as there are in Galax with deer running across the road, they need to let loose on some of this like the three hunters charged. Let them kill what they want to.

Spare the rod
This is a comment about spankings. My husband has told me many times about how old-timey school teachers treated those children. The caller about the “sore bottoms” must be sick. I wonder, did he treat his kids like that? If I had lived up here and someone abused my child, I would be arrested, especially the teachers. What kind of teacher — they must have been sadistic back then and hated children, or were old maids. I am so sorry I am ranting on, but this just burned me up. I am not from here. I went to school and I was born in 1946. When I went to school we had teachers that knew how to treat us like human beings. I come from North Carolina.

Say it right
I received some Christmas cards in the mail wanting a donation from a company and all of them said “happy holidays” on the front. I will not be sending cards that say “happy holidays.” I want cards that say “merry Christmas.”
Editor’s note: Last year, we pointed out that “holidays” is an abbreviation for “holy days,” of which there are more than one leading up to Christmas, even for Christians. It’s far from a secular greeting. So, when you wish someone “happy holidays” you are actually wishing them a cheerful Advent season that leads up to and includes Christmas. So, “happy holidays” is like wishing someone a deluxe version of “Merry Christmas.”

Able-bodied
Just a few words about social services workers who need to be checking on some of these young, able-bodied people that are able to work — supporting and keeping them up. Why aren’t they out working? It needs to be looked in to.

Bad stance
Fellow Republicans, is our party representing the majority? In the polls, 73 percent of the public wants taxes raised on the rich, yet Congress won’t do it. We have congressmen making pledges to never consider this even if the majority wants it. Are they simple-minded enough to think they can go against the majority and not be voted out? Or, are we simple-minded enough to accept it when they say it was to save jobs? Go back and look at the economy from Roosevelt to present day. The economy was better for the middle class when taxes were raises on the rich. This was true in Roosevelt, George Bush Sr. and Bill Clinton years. There is no proof that low taxes on the rich have ever improved the general economy or jobs. Can we uphold a bad stand on real issues because 5 percent of the population demanded? Is this democracy at work or just paid-for politics?

Write-in votes
With the choice of candidates we have in this next presidential election, I think we would be far better off if we elected Goofy and Mickey Mouse for president and vice president. That is about all I have to say.

Fast and Furious
I’m going to reference a CBS news article by Sharyl Attkisson. Documents obtained by CBS News show that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives discussed using their covert operation “Fast and Furious” to argue for controversial new rules about gun sales. ATF secretly encouraged gun dealers to sell to suspected traffickers for Mexican drug cartels to go after the “big fish.” But ATF whistleblowers told CBS and Congress it was a dangerous practice called “gunwalking,” and it put thousands of weapons on the street. Many were used in violent crimes in Mexico. Two were found at the murder scene of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. Just wanted to get the facts out there for people who support the Obama administration.

Lots of love
This is in response to the caller about the over-the-hill woman with super powers. Maybe she has a love for this person that time and distance can’t take away. Her very thoughts of him he should be able to feel. Only the end of her time will be the end of the love of 40 years. If he could only know this.

Complaints abound
After being a devoted reader of the Hotline for a long time, I have finally reached a conclusion. Most people would complain even if you hanged them with a new rope.

Outdone by the boss
The way the economy is and everything, we’ve got one manufacturing company around here where the boss is trying to outdo everybody. He has to come in and work. He turns around and demands everybody has to work and everybody is caught up except certain jobs. He does that all the time. I don’t think that is right. He needs to go back where he came from.
