A spending ploy
The Carroll County School Board, superintendent and supervisors are obviously living in a bubble. They don’t see or understand what is going on. The economy and prospects for jobs are dismal. Our country is in such debt that it can’t be sustained unless there are major changes made. The first stimulus bill or package did nothing to stimulate the economy. It just put our country deeper in debt. The second stimulus bill or jobs bill will not help the economy or create jobs. It is another tax increase. It is another ploy for Obama to gain votes. He will promise everything to everybody to get re-elected. That’s what he cares about — himself and his agenda, not what is best for this country. To read where the superintendent and school board are salivating over the possibility from getting money from the jobs bill is disgusting [with the approach of] “let’s get all we can for the schools.” The supervisors think the same way. They are into spending big time. We need to burst their bubble.
I want to know if I am the only person in Grayson County that has a problem with tax dollars that tripled to build a new school to house 500 students and now has less than 200 enrolled. A huge side slap that was intended for high school students that are now in Grayson County that was already overcrowded and children walking over one another. It has a pottery kiln in the art class that is never used. Now tax dollars go to make the payments on the new school while other schools in the county suffer and do without. The school is more than half empty while our tax dollars are wasted to pay for it and so much that is never used.
Recently the city public works department was painting — with the highway maintenance department in Galax — a white stripe on the highway that has recently been repaved. They did an excellent job and it lasted every bit of 90 seconds until people started driving on the wet paint. Now, there is a multiple choice of where you want to drive. Which stripe should you follow, and it is not the fault of the city. As a matter of fact, the people that are driving the cars look like they have driven through a white mud puddle and I would like to know that not a penny of our tax money is being used to clean off their tires and the side of their cars because they are too old to be driving. I love elderly people but when it gets down to the point that they don’t know how to drive on their side of the road, they should not be driving.
Only good for some
I’m the one who called in about the plan of taking Israel’s land. I did not hear this on Fox News. I heard it from a very good friend of Israel and a friend of the prime minister. As for the president shaking hands with the prime minister and saying “good job,” he was good with words before the election, but after the election those words are only good for certain groups.
Keep your heads up
I don’t have a child on the Carroll varsity football team but have been to several games this year and have felt very sorry for the team. They are playing their hearts out and can’t win a game. The school should re-evaluate the coaches to see if they are qualified. They’ve got the talent out on the field, so it is obvious where the problem lies. Keep your heads up, players, you are a great team. Coaches, wise up and don’t stick to your game plans like you have been. It seems it just isn’t working for you.
The Carroll County Schools superintendent said the system is facing the possibility of layoffs for the first time since the economy changed. Many should have been gone years ago. Expending stimulus money to keep someone employed was not stimulating the economy. There is a lot of waste to be found in the school system — waste from materials to personnel. Carroll County is no exception. The system is top heavy with administrative positions. When someone is not holding their own in an administrative spot, they will be sent to another position or to one that has been created for them. They will get a new title, the same if not more money and usually an easier job. They won’t get fired or laid off. All positions from the ground up need to be looked over and those deemed not necessary should be done away with. If the school board would make an effort to weed out positions not truly necessary, a lot of taxpayer money would be spared.
Who was first?
I don’t know why we keep celebrating Columbus Day, because Columbus never discovered America. All he did was sail through the Atlantic and sail through the West Indies. This guy didn’t do anything. They spread gonorrhea and syphilis around with all those native Indians they found. He never found enough gold to fill a hen’s tooth. The Vikings pre-date Columbus by 400 years. Viking artifacts found in the Mississippi River along the east coast and all the way over to Yucatan in Mexico all pre-date Columbus by 300-400 years. If you really want to say who discovered America, how about the American Indians? They pre-date the whole bunch by about 10,000 years. I think they were here first, but we don’t give them any credit.
Editor's note: Forget Columbus Day. To honor the Vikings' discovery of America we should celebrate every Thursday, which is named after the Norse god Thor. A longer weekend for plundering and pillaging!
On the phone
It is a scary sight when you are trying to get through an intersection where construction has been going on for months and the officer directing traffic is talking on a cell phone. Gee.
Look into it
There are people getting stuff from social services, with boyfriends living in their apartments and everything. The state needs to look in on them, too.
Whom to blame
I’m getting sick and tired of reading the in the Hotline about blaming President Bush for every little thing that goes wrong. Mr. Bush is not responsible for closing post offices. It’s Obama’s fault. The stupid economy and greed out of Congress.
Editor’s note: Nope, you can blame none of the above. The post office is an independent agency of the U.S. government.
The Republicans are at it again. They don’t want to raise taxes on the rich. They never have raised taxes on the rich. They want to keep raising taxes on the little people and the people that are not really able to pay it. They keep talking about Obama not doing this and that. Obama is trying to straighten out the mess that the Republicans got us in to start with.
Editor’s note: Actually, the Republicans don’t want to raise income taxes at any level, citing a potential drop in spendable income during a fragile economy.
