NARROWS – Galax lost for the seventh time in its past eight games, falling to Narrows 27-8 Friday night in a Mountain Empire District game at Ragsdale Field.

The Tide (2-7 overall, 1-3 district) lost the battle up front as Narrows’ offense line pushed around Galax’s defenders all night.

The Green Wave (6-3, 2-1) didn’t have to be creative with its play calling – but instead ran the ball straight up the gut all night long. On its first possession, Jon Martin carried the ball on four out of the six plays, racking up 58 of his 144 yards, including a 45-yard scamper through a couple missed arm tackles to put the Wave up 6-0 with 9:09 left in the first quarter.

Galax’s offense went three-and-out on its opening possession, managing only 7 yards before being forced to punt the ball away.

Narrows took over on its own 14-yard line with just over eight minutes to play in the opening quarter and again ran the ball straight at Galax.

Tide head coach Jared Van Acker frantically made adjustments along the defensive line to try and stop the run – but was unsuccessful all night. Narrows ran the ball eight straight times, advancing to the Tide 36 before a motion penalty moved them back to the 41.

On the next play, Wave quarterback Corey Lowe would catch Galax’s defensive backs sleeping as he hit Josh Collins on an out route for a 41-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead with 2:05 left in the first quarter. Narrows’ second scoring drive used up 6:03 of the game clock and went 10 plays.

Galax’s offense struggled again – going three-and-out – and was forced to punt the ball away. Narrows would take the ball over with 35 seconds left in the first quarter on its own 45-yard line and moved the ball at will yet again.

After pushing the ball inside the Tide 10-yard line, Galax’s defense would come up with its biggest play of the night – stopping the Wave on a fourth-and-goal from the 9-yard line.

Lowe found Wesley Ferguson inside the 2-yard line and he managed to reach within inches of the goal line, but was marked just short with 6:35 to play in the first half.

Galax took over inside the 1-yard line and moved the chains for the first time with five minutes left in the first half when Tyler Houk found Jacob Fisher for a 9-yard pick-up, moving the ball to the Galax 16.

Three plays later, Galax would punt the ball – only to have a roughing the kicker penalty give them a first down and another shot at putting points on the board before half.

The Tide moved the chains two times and reached the 44-yard line before stalling and punting away for the third time in the half.

Narrows took over on its own 46-yard line and ran out the remainder of the second half.

Galax’s offense struggled out of the gate in the second half, managing three plays and out on its first possession.

The Wave would take advantage of Galax yet again, running the ball 12 times in 13 plays and going 66 yards in 6:56 to go up by 21 with 4:10 remaining in the third quarter.

After trading possessions, Narrows would take the three-touchdown lead into the final quarter.

The Wave put together one more scoring drive after taking over with 7:31 to play in the game on its own 30-yard line. Narrows went the distance in nine plays and 5:05. The Tide blocked the extra point attempt and trailed 27-0 with 2:26 left in the game.

Houk took the ensuing kickoff 35 yards, setting Galax up with a first down inside Wave territory.

Seven plays and 1:50 later Galax scored its first points of the game when Houk found Fisher open in the corner of the end zone. After completing the two-point conversion, the Tide trailed 27-8 with 20 seconds left. A failed onside kick-off allowed Narrows to run the remaining time off the board.

Galax finishes up its season Friday night at Big Creek, W.Va.
