INDEPENDENCE — A Grayson County man who was making his first appearance last Monday in Grayson General District Court now faces another charge after he was allegedly involved in a fist fight with another prisoner.
Sheriff Richard Vaughan said Rodney Edward Black, was in a holding cell with other prisoners when he allegedly got into a fight with another prisoner. Vaughan did not identify the other prisoner, who was transported to Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax by the Independence Volunteer Rescue Squad and received stitches for a head wound.
Black was charged with malicious wounding as a result of the fight.
Grayson Cpl. Jeff Merilic and Conservation Officer Jason Harris arrested Black at his home at 1299 Vista Road in Independence on Jan. 9 for threatening to burn a family member's house.
While executing the warrant, Merilic and Harris observed a sawed-off shotgun in his residence. Deputies returned with a search warrant and found two pistols and ammunition.
Black was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a sawed-off-shotgun and possession of ammunition by a felon.
Black is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin without bond.
