HILLSVILLE —  A Woodlawn couple faces multiple charges after allegedly paying for a motel stay with counterfeit U.S. Postal Service money orders, according to information from the Hillsville Police Department.
Police charged Heath Harold Spalding, 37, and Sherri Nicole Spalding, 39, with two counts each of felony defrauding motels for more than $200 in September, according to court information.
The Spaldings had received phony money orders through the mail from a third party, Sgt. James Alderman found after his investigation. The counterfeiter and the Woodlawn couple probably made their connections over the Internet.
The couple used the counterfeit money orders to pay for a motel stay locally and got change back, the investigator said. The total involved exceeded $1,800.
The Spaldings are out on bond and they are making arrangements to pay restitution to the motel, Alderman said.
