INDEPENDENCE — An Independence man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after Grayson County authorities were called to his residence for a domestic dispute.
Grayson Sheriff Richard Vaughan said Rhandell Davis, 55, of Independence, was apprehended around 3:20 p.m. after officers spent roughly 20 minutes searching the woods near his home, just west of Independence on U.S. 58.
Deputies were called to the scene for an alleged domestic dispute, but prior to officers arriving, Davis fled on foot into the woods, allegededly with a rifle.
Grayson deputies — along with assistance from the Independence Police Department — set up a perimeter around the woods, and Deputy Billy Johnson spotted Davis coming out of the woods in a neighbor's yard.
Davis was not carrying the rifle, and was immediately arrested for being intoxicated in public.
Deputies searched the wooded area for another 90 minutes for the rifle, but were unable to find it.
On Wednesday morning, Virginia State Police officers searched the scene with two bomb dogs, but did not find the rifle.
Davis is a convicted felon, and was charged with drunk in public and felon in possession of explosive materials after deputies executed a search warrant on his home and found extensive amounts of ammunition.
Davis is currently being held at New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin.
