The Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police and other law enforcement organizations are seeking tougher background checks on firearms buyers.
The association and the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence said they want to ensure that criminals already prohibited by law from possessing guns also are prevented from obtaining them.
