A traffic stop in Galax resulted in the arrest of a man wanted for bank robbery in Puerto Rico.
According to a Galax Police Department report, Officer Drew Burnett conducted a traffic stop at 12:48 p.m. on Nov. 30 on East Stuart Drive at Woodview Drive.
During the stop, a passenger in that vehicle, Bruno Feliz Rivas, 31, of Allen Lane in Galax, was checked through the National Crime Information Center computer system.
Rivas was found to be wanted by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico Police Department for armed bank robbery. On Dec 9, 2011, Rivas is alleged to have robbed the Scotiabank in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, while armed with a kitchen knife, according to police.
Rivas is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail without bond pending an advisement of counsel hearing in Galax General District Court.
Puerto Rican authorities intend to extradite Rivas back to that United States territory.
“Officer Burnett’s attention to detail resulted in this fugitive being apprehended to stand trial,” the press release stated. “When officers stop vehicles, they never know who they may be speaking with.”
