Elected by the Pipers Gap District residents to represent them on the Carroll County Board of Supervisors, it is my responsibility to answer questions and attempt to solve problems. It is the part of the job I enjoy the most.
Normally I do not respond to unsigned letters, anonymous phone calls or unknown Hotline callers. In a Hotline item published July 17 (“Winter Danger”), the caller referred to water crossing Pipers Gap Road during prolonged precipitation.
I agree with the caller and want it to be known I had already contacted our local and district Virginia Department of Transportation officials with similar concerns.
I emailed Hillsville area engineer Dan Huff on July 7. The following day this identical message was forwarded to Lisa Hughes, residency administrator in Martinsville.
In the first email I expressed concern that water was running down Pipers Gap Road during prolonged precipitation and that I felt it was a dangerous situation for motorists in both freezing weather and warmer seasons.
I followed up July 15 when I had received no reply.
I received an email from Hughes stating she and Dan Huff had inspected the area and agreed it was a problem. She said the remedy would require cooperation from two property owners.
On July 19, Hughes indicated the property owners agreed to the proposed repair — for which I am grateful — and VDOT will initiate repairs as soon as practical. VDOT wouldn’t be able to do any work until it dries up a little.
Had the caller contacted me, I would have been able to explain this.
If you have concerns about area road conditions, contact me. I have found VDOT officials to be very responsive.
I find it easier to respond to email questions from citizens, but my phone number is listed in the phonebook. If it is necessary to leave a message, speak slowly and distinctly. I have had a few messages that were impossible to understand the correct number in order to return the call.
Thanks for allowing me to serve you.
