Pioneers stop 14-year slide

MAX MEADOWS –– For the first time since 1994, Fort Chiswell has left a football game against Grayson County with a smile on its face.

The Pioneers used a 19-point outburst in the second period to end a 14-game losing streak to the Blue Devils, taking a 25-6 win in a Mountain Empire District game Friday at C.F. McKinney Field.

Following a scoreless first quarter, the Pioneers (5-3 overall, 2-0 district) exploded for three touchdowns in the second period. Hody Viars got the ball rolling with a 4-yard touchdown on a quarterback keeper early in the period, then connected with halfback Chris Rodriguez on a 45-yard touchdown pass midway through the quarter for a 13-0 lead.

Rodriguez capped the surge with a 1-yard run 2:50 before the half.

The Pioneers added a touchdown on the first play of the second half when Rodriguez broke free and raced 63 yards for a score. The Pioneer junior finished with 163 yards on 18 carries.

Grayson County (0-8, 0-3) got on the board in the third period, capping a 70-yard drive when Ryan Hernandez hit Ethan Hash on a 3-yard touchdown pass with 4:47 left in the quarter.

Omar Larreta led Grayson County with 70 yards on 12 rushing attempts.
