Pioneers roll past Devils by 37

Fort Chiswell used a pair of lengthy runs to deal Grayson County a 64-27 loss.

INDEPENDENCE -- Fort Chiswell scored the game’s first eight points and never looked back, coasting to a 64-27 win over Grayson County in a Mountain Empire District girls’ game Friday. Carlytta Hamm scored from underneath to cap an 8-0 Pioneer run to open the game, and Fort Chiswell closed the first quarter with seven straight points, taking a 17-3 lead on Elizabeth Waller’s layup. Grayson County (0-10 overall 0-2 district) drew to within six points by opening the second quarter with an 8-0 run. Kayla Spurlin hit three straight jumpshots and Cortney Halsey finished a fast break to cap the rally, but the Pioneers (10-2, 2-1) answered with a lengthy run of their own, holding Grayson scoreless the final six minutes of the half and scoring 14 straight points to take a 31-11 lead into the half. Nancy Thacker opened the run with a pair of long jumpers, including a 3-pointer, and Hamm closed the spurt with two buckets from the paint. The 14-0 run evolved into a 22-2 rally by the midpoint of the third quarter, with Thacker and Hamm connecting for a 39-13 lead at 5:30 of the third. Four Pioneers reached double figures in the scoring column, led by Thacker with 16 points. Hamm finished with 12 points while Sarah Whisman and Elizabeth Waller tossed in 10 points apiece.
