HILLSVILLE –– Briana Steele connected on a game-tying, two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh and Patrick County pushed three runs across three innings later to take a 9-3 nondistrict softball win Wednesday over Carroll County.
Carroll County (8-5) did most of its damage in a big second-inning rally, starting with a solo home run by Cheyenne Strickland, her fifth homer in two weeks. Eden Durnil later yanked a two-run double into the leftfield corner, and Ragan Halsey and Autumn Hill followed with RBI singles for a 5-1 Cavalier lead.
Logan Martin had six base hits, all singles, and three RBIs for Patrick County (7-6). Steele added three hits and Beth Williams had two hits and two RBIs.
Hill had four hits, Ragan Halsey had three and Durnil added two for Carroll County.
Abingdon 6, Carroll County 3: Brooke Griffith hit two-run homers in consecutive innings Tuesday to lead the Falcons past the Cavaliers in a Southwest District game in Hillsville.
Griffith’s first homer broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth, and her second round-tripper capped a four-run fifth for a 6-0 Abingdon lead.
Autumn Hill singled home a run in the bottom of the fifth for Carroll. In the sixth, Gracie Davidson smacked an RBI double and scored on Eden Durnil’s base hit, but the Cavaliers would get no closer.
Falcon starting pitcher Logan Viers shut the Cavaliers out on five hits through four innings but left the game after taking a line drive to the knee in the fifth. All of the Cavaliers’ scoring came off reliever Kelsee Rolen, who was still able to hold the lead for the Falcons.
Viers also had two hits for Abingdon. Durnil and Eustacia Smith had two hits apiece for the Cavaliers.
Carroll County 1, Galax 0: Jessica Lewis scored the only goal of the match in the second half and Carroll County narrowly held off Galax for a 1-0 win in a nondistrict contest Wednesday at Tommy Thompson Field.
Carroll County upped its record to 4-2 with the win.
Abingdon 7, Carroll County 1: Lydia Billips led the Falcons to the SWD win Tuesday at Tommy Thompson Field with four goals. Sierra Smith added a pair of goals for Abingdon.
Crysta Guynn scored Carroll County’s goal in the second half. The Cavaliers dropped to 3-2 overall, 0-2 in the district.
Galax 4, George Wythe 0: Junior Espinosa scored two goals and assisted on a third as the Maroon Tide remained undefeated on the year after the nondistrict win Tuesday in Wytheville.
Andres Medina also had two goals while Edgar Guzman had a pair of assists for Galax (9-0). Oliver Gonzales had one assist and Mesiel Solis had five saves for the Maroon Tide.
Grayson County 4, Auburn 1: The Blue Devils rallied from a 3-1 halftime deficit and avenged a season-opening loss to the Eagles with the nondistrict win Tuesday in Independence.
Mario Ruiz scored twice after halftime off of Caleb Billings assists, including scoring the game-winner late in the match. Billings also had one of the second-half goals for Grayson (6-2), which had defeated Narrows 10-2 on Monday.
Grayson County 8, Galax 0: The Blue Devils’ Jake Parnell edged Galax’s Jacob Kohl in three sets at No. 3 singles while Garrett Bailey, Mike Vaughan, Grayson Holdaway, Smith Hart and Nick Brewer were all straight-sets winners for the Blue Devils in an MED win.
Galax 7, Bland County 2: The Bears’ Ryan Keen took the win at No. 1 singles but the Maroon Tide wrapped up the team win by claiming the remaining five singles matches. Kohl, Caleb Bartlett, William Patton, Anthony Kwang and Justin Campbell all won in straight sets for the Maroon Tide.
Galax 8, Bland County 1: The Maroon Tide claimed five of the six singles wins and dropped the Bears in an MED match Monday.
Paige Hanks, Sydney Lindsey and Lindsey Ayers all won without giving up a game, while Susan Davis and Carleigh Pack were also winners for the Tide.
Galax also swept the three doubles matches.
