BLUEFIELD –– Count on it. Every couple of weeks, Austin Pack is bound to channel his inner Jimmer.

Having averaged 8.5 points in the nine games since unloading for 29 against Tazewell, the Galax point guard popped in 25 points Friday night, knocking down five 3-pointers and pacing the Maroon Tide in a 68-50 win over Grayson County in the Mountain Empire District boys’ tournament championship game at Graham Middle School.

Galax (22-2) will enter Region C Division 1 play as the top seed after adding the tournament title to its regular season crown.

The Maroon Tide had to battle its way into a 28-28 halftime tie but took the lead for good by opening the second half with nine unanswered points as part of a 21-5 third-period run.

Galax’s five starters all scored one basket to open the second half, answered only by a Ty Cannaday layup for the Blue Devils (15-10), who fell behind 41-30 on a Deion George transition score. Pack hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions for Galax, and Lawrence Parsons converted a Donte Peoples feed for a 49-33 Tide lead at 1:36 of the third.

Grayson County would get as close as 12 points, 51-39, early in the fourth quarter, but the Maroon Tide never allowed the Blue Devils to get any closer the rest of the way.

Pack scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half, teaming with Parsons, who had 10 of his 17 points after intermission and who was named the district’s player of the year following the game. Both players finished with a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds each.
